Editing images on the Midjourney web interface

Midjourney’s web editing tool gives you a flexible, visual way to refine AI-generated images directly in your browser—no command-line input or re-prompting from scratch required. Whether you’re looking to correct small issues, update specific details, or creatively transform your image, this editor makes it possible with simple, targeted controls.
In this section, we’ll walk through the key features of the editor, followed by a closer look at the most popular use cases like replacing objects, adding new elements, changing aspect ratios, and retexturing existing compositions.
Accessing the editing tool and preparing your image
The Midjourney web editor can be accessed in two main ways—either by selecting an image from your gallery or by uploading an external image. This flexibility allows you to edit AI-generated images as well as visuals created outside of Midjourney.
Here’s how to begin:
-
Edit your own
Midjourney image
From your web gallery, locate any image (upscaled or not) and click Edit beneath it. This opens the editor with that image already loaded and ready for refinement. -
Upload an image
from your device
On the editor’s landing screen, click Edit uploaded image to select a file from your computer. This is useful for applying Midjourney's stylistic tools to images you’ve created elsewhere. -
Use an image
URL
Choose Edit from URL if you want to edit an image hosted online. Simply paste the direct image link, and Midjourney will load it into the editor.
Once your image is loaded, you’ll enter a clean, canvas-based workspace where you can begin making changes using intuitive tools and guided prompts.
Editing tool features
The Midjourney editor is designed for focused, region-based edits and creative retexturing. It’s a powerful way to modify what you’ve already created—without starting over from a fresh prompt.
Here are the core features available in the tool:
1. Erase and restore areas
Use the Erase brush to remove part of the image you want to change. This defines the target region that Midjourney will regenerate. If you change your mind or go too far, switch to the Restore brush to bring the original content back.
2. Write a focused prompt
After erasing, a prompt input field appears. Describe exactly what you’d like to appear in the cleared area. This prompt only affects the erased region, so it can be concise and specific.
3. Submit and review
Once your prompt is ready, click Submit edit. Midjourney will generate four variations for the selected area. You can then choose your favorite, upscale it, or continue editing further.
4. Crop and resize
The Crop/Resize tool lets you adjust the image’s frame. You can expand the canvas, shift the aspect ratio, or reframe the composition. This is especially helpful when preparing visuals for different formats like banners, thumbnails, or posters.
5. Retexture through prompting
You don’t need to erase any part of the image to change its
overall visual style. Simply open the image in the editor, leave it untouched,
and enter a new prompt describing the desired texture, artistic treatment, or
mood—such as:
"cinematic lighting with
soft film grain"
or "vintage watercolor style"
.
Midjourney will reinterpret the image using your prompt, while keeping the original layout and composition intact. This makes it easy to explore different aesthetic directions without disrupting the structure you’ve already built.
Note: Retexturing can also be done during image generation using an image prompt and style reference. We’ll explore that method in detail later. The web editor, however, allows you to apply stylistic changes directly to a finished image—ideal when you're happy with the composition but want to explore alternative looks.
Popular use cases
Continuing from the futuristic cityscape image you zoomed out in the previous section, let’s now evolve the scene into something more imaginative and layered. We’ll go through four popular editing techniques—replacing, adding, extending, and retexturing—each serving as a creative step in transforming the image while maintaining its original structure.
Replacing a part of the image
Let’s start by removing some of the flying cars from the skyline. While the original composition works, simplifying the airspace gives us room to build something more surreal in the next steps.
Use the Erase tool to manually brush over and remove selected flying cars—especially the ones near the top or edges.

Do not need to enter a new prompt. Simply submit the edit with the erased areas left empty.
Midjourney will regenerate those regions with background sky elements that blend naturally into the existing image. This cleanup stage prepares the scene for new additions while retaining the city’s atmosphere.

Adding a new element
With some open space now available in the sky, it’s the perfect time to introduce a bold, imaginative centerpiece—a massive flying whale.
To add it, use the Erase tool to clear a wide area above the city skyline.

In the prompt field, enter:
majestic flying whale, large translucent fins, gliding peacefully across the sky
Click Submit edit and choose the version that integrates most naturally into your scene.
This creates a striking contrast against the structured city below and gives your image a clear narrative focal point.

Adjusting aspect ratio
To make the scene feel even more expansive and accommodate more sky activity, you decide to extend the canvas vertically. This transforms the image into a taller 4:3 format and creates visual space for celestial elements.
Use the Crop/Resize tool to extend the canvas upward. Erase the newly added top section to create an editable zone.

In the prompt, enter:
deep night sky with colorful shooting stars and a large full moon partially visible behind clouds
Submit the edit and review the results. This upward extension not only frames the flying whale better but also adds a sense of wonder and vertical depth to the composition.

Midjourney’s web editor bridges the gap between full image generation and creative refinement. It gives you the ability to surgically adjust a scene—whether that’s changing a minor detail or applying a broad stylistic transformation.
By mastering these editing tools, you’ll gain greater creative control, reduce repetition, and unlock new possibilities within each image you generate. In the next section, we’ll dive into how to organize and manage your images more effectively using Midjourney’s gallery and folder tools.
